The mystery of the virgin’s birth captures our mind every year in this season.
For us to ponder is nothing new because we’ve learnt this pondering from the scriptures. In Luke 2:15-19 we read “And-it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing, which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made unto us.
And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.
And all that heard it wondered of those things which were told them by the Shepherd.
But Mary kept all these things and pondered them in her heart”.
The overwhelming experience of this virgin birth has left Mary pondering in her heart. This is not just thinking, this is asking hard questions from within without being able to find an answer. The evidence of the miracle was lying right in front of her in the person the baby Jesus.
As we reflect upon this incarnation, we too are pondering how deity became humanity. To help us understand this let’s look on Philippians 2:5-7 “Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:
Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men “.
From this we learn that it is God who made himself in the likeness of men. This mystery has captured the imagination of people from varied backgrounds. Despite not being able to fully comprehend this mystery of God, let us join Mary in magnifying the Lord for the display of his wisdom in bringing us salvation.
