This is a responsibility that has fallen on all born again believers of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The main scripture that speaks to this is 1st Peter 3: 15-16. “But sanctify the Lord God in your heart: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: Having a good conscience; that, where as they speak evil of you, as of evil doers, they may be ashamed that falsely accused your good conversation in Christ “
(While the responsibility has fallen upon all of us as Christians to defend the gospel; there are believers who have taken defending the gospel to another level and that level is called Christian Apologetics.
The main thrust of a Christian Apologetic is to address objections and criticism raised against Christians by Skeptics which involves people of other faith and others with different worldviews.
The Apostle Peter was careful to inform us that meekness must be exercised in defending the hope that is in you. This is supported by what Paul says in Colossians 4:6 “Let your speech be always with grace, season with salt, that ye may know how ye hath to answer every man “.
The Christian Apologists must be able to defend all subject matters pertaining to the Kingdom. The matter of the Godhead, the Incarnation, the resurrection, Salvation, Grace, Justification, Sanctification, Eternal Life, and much more. In order to be an effective defender of the Gospel it is important that the individual be able to apply Old Testament teachings and New Testament teachings to current affairs. For this we are instructed by the Apostle Paul in 2nd Timothy 2:15 “Study to Show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needed not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth “
It was reported that Charlie Kirk was a Christian Apologist appearing on different forums defending his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. In his speeches he’d often say “Prove me wrong “. His mentor Frank Turek said the day before he died Charlie sent him a text with a scripture from 1st Corinthians 16:9 it says “For a great door an effectual is open unto me and there are many adversaries “The next day He was dead.
Stephen lost his life defending the gospel, James lost his life defending the gospel, the Apostle Paul lost his life defending the gospel, all the Apostles died a martyr with the exception of John. In light of all this, my prayer to every believer is to stand up, stand up for Jesus, it will be worth it all.
