According to Luke 18:1-8 Jesus spoke of a parable involving a judge and a widow. This judge has no fear for God or respect for man. Yet because of persistent faith, this widow got his attention. As interesting as that encounter was, what Jesus said in verse (8b) is worthwhile pondering. Jesus asks the question “Nevertheless when the son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth “?
(First of all, Jesus did not say if the son of man cometh but, he said “WHEN THE SON OF MAN COMETH “. This speaks to us of the certainty of Jesus’s return. There are many passages in the Bible that bears truth to this statement. One such passage is Mark 14:62 where Jesus was on trial before the high Priest “And Jesus said, I am: and ye shall see the son of man sitting on the right hand of power and coming in clouds of heaven “. Once again, we have the evidence of the certainty of his return.
The second thing that we see from this statement of Jesus is the uncertainty of faith on the earth when he returns. Why did Jesus ask this question? The answer is in the persistency of this widow. Although the judge was of such character; yet she was convinced that he could avenge her of her adversary.
As Christians we too will need to exercise faith in the promises of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In the face of persecution, we must be convinced in our Spirit that the Lord will return. Faith can become weak; therefore, it is our responsibility to ask the Lord like the disciples in Luke 17:5 to increase (strengthen) our faith. We need this faith in our everyday lives, for the word tells us in Hebrews 11:6 that it is impossible to please God without faith, therefore let’s be persistent in faith, as we await the second coming of our Lord Jesus Christ
