In 2nd Peter 3:10-14 “But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burnt up.
Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and Godliness, looking for and hastening unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for a new heaven and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
Wherefore, beloved, seeing that ye look for such things, be diligent that he may be found of him in peace, without spot, and blameless”.
(This wish we have just read is absolutely frightening, to know that this world order is going to be dissolved by fire, is difficult to imagine. Twice the Apostle Peter made reference to this. In verse (10) and verse (11) as he wrote his epistle to the Church.
We should also note that Peter reminded us that “the Lord is not slack concerning his promise.” These things will come to pass, therefore the question before us in verse (11b) is “What manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversations and Godliness “.
Two things that are worth noticing from this question:
1. What type of conversation we should be having considering the fast-approaching dissolving of this world order.
The Bible tells us that our conversation is in heaven from whence we look for the coming of our Lord Jesus. Philippians 3:20. This means we are to be careful in what we say generally as Christians because the Bible also said in another place “That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give an account thereof in the day of judgement “Matthew 12:36.
2. Peter also exalt us in this question, that we should live Godly, for It is so important at this time that our lives reflect the holiness of God. Without holiness no one shall see God. Hebrews 12:14 tells us “Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see the Lord “. Let’s be diligent in our approach as we await the second coming of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
