We read in John 21:2-3 “there were together Simon Peter, and Thomas called Didymus, and Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, and the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples.
Simon Peter saith unto them, I go fishing. They said unto him, we also go with thee. They went forth and entered into a ship immediately: and that night they caught nothing.
(The month of October is considered Pastor’s appreciation month and what we’ve observed from this passage, Peter the potential leader of the new church influenced some of Jesus’s disciples to go fishing. These men were heading in the wrong direction. You will recall Jesus saying to the disciples follow me and I will make you fishers of men. Instead of Catching fish these men should’ve been engaged in the exercise of catching men. It is while they were on the beach Jesus showed up and gave Peter the three-fold ministry.
(1) Peter was asked by Jesus in John 21:15b, ” Simon son of Jonas, lovest Thou me more than these? Peter saith unto him, yes Lord: thou knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto him feed my lambs”.
(Jesus pointed out in this charge to Peter, that there are going to be young converts who need to be discipled so as to become true followers of Christ)
We are told in 1 Peter 2:2-3 “as newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that they may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious”.
(Therefore, when the Lord says feed my lambs, he is referring to the young converts that would come as a result of Peter catching men not fishes, who desire the sincere milk of the word so they might grow in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus. Let us go out and evangelize so as to become fishers of men church).
