A close look in the Bible will indicate from the very outset that God is interested in Religious Freedom.
In the book of Exodus, the-phrase let my people go is used over (12) Twelve times. Indicating that God wants his people to be free to worship.
This freedom is not only physical but, it is spiritual. God also indicates why he wants his people to be let go. The reason for him wanting his people to be free, is recorded at least (6) Six times in the book of Exodus. One of them is Exodus 8:1-2 “And the Lord spake unto Moses, go onto Pharaoh, and say onto him, thus saith the Lord, let my people go, that they may serve me. And if thou refuse to let them go, behold, I will smite all thy borders with frogs:”
(Along with five other places, here God is giving the true reason for wanting his people to come out from under the oppression of bondage in Pharaoh’s Government, it is that they may serve me. Government should not dictate how a person should worship. Therefore, freedom of religion should be respected and recognized worldwide.
Here in the United States, we have just celebrated Independence Day, but we should remember where the journey started. History tells us that the Pilgrims flee Great Britain in pursuit of religious freedom. While America was not their first stop, America became their final destination. It is the land that permits freedom of religion unlike the Church of England, where because of their belief they were being persecuted.
We should not take freedom of religion as a cloak to worship the enemy. There are some guidelines in the scriptures that speak to who we should worship.
Let’s look at John 4: 22-24 Jesus speaking “Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshipers shall worship the Father in Spirit and in truth: For the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in Spirit and in Truth. “)
In this passage Jesus is making it clear that freedom of religion can be used to worship the wrong person.
According to the writings of the Apostle Paul, in Galatians 1:6-10. The Apostle is making it clear to us that even if angels from heaven should preach another gospel other than the one that he has preached which is, the Lord Jesus Christ and him crucified, that Angel should be accursed. For he did not receive this revelation from man, but from God through the Spirit.
So, freedom of religion is good, but at all costs we should avoid worshiping the wrong person.
