Can we take a step back and imagine what type of world it would be, without the birth of Jesus.
Every time we think about Christmas, we think about the birth of Jesus. The prophet Isaiah told us in Isaiah 9:2 “The people that walk in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shine” This is telling us, that Jesus came into a spiritually dark world, of which there was groping and stumbling. In this setting people did what seemed right in their own eyes a condition of chaos and anarchy.
The Apostle Paul in Ephesians 2:11-13 captured the condition of world then as he spoke primarily about the Gentiles. This is what he said “Wherefore remember, that he being in time past Gentiles in the flesh, who are called uncircumcision by that which is called the circumcision in the flesh made by hands. That at that time ye were without God in the world: being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers from the covenant of promise having no hope, and without God in the world: But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ “.
(When one look on verse 12 it speaks of spiritual darkness, to have no hope and to be without God in this world, it’s real true darkness. It is here that we give God thanks for the light of the world which is Jesus. In St John 1:4-5 we read “In him was life: and the life was the light of men. And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not “.
In view of all these scriptures we have learnt to appreciate Christmas more because it speaks to the birth of Jesus who brought life and light into a spiritually dark world.
